1 Call of Duty-like game has been postponed indefinitely by Ubisoft!
1.1 On October 9, Ubisoft made an announcement on the extended postponement of the preseason for XDefiant, a game resembling Call of Duty. This development contributes to the expanding array of challenges that hinder the release of the free-to-play arena shooter.
1.1.1 Originally revealed in 2021 as an odd Tom Clancy title, Ubisoft delayed the cyberpunk-inspired multiplayer shooter in September due to failed console quality control checks.
1.1.1.1 “At the end of July, we started [the compliance testing] process, and we got our first results back by mid-August which was a Not Pass,” game director Mark Rubin said in a September 11 update blog. “There is however a likely scenario where we get a conditional Pass meaning we have to do a Day 1 patch with some final fixes to ensure compliance. If we do need to do a Day 1 patch, then that pushes our date out to early/mid-October.”

The previously determined release timeframe has become unfeasible subsequent to the public testing sessions of XDefiant, which were conducted between September 28 and 29. Ubisoft concluded by announcing a postponement of the game’s intended six-week preseason, which was originally intended to include new areas, weapons, and “faction” teams inspired by previous Ubisoft universes, such as The Division.
To paraphrase Ubisoft’s article from October 9: “some inconsistencies in the game experience that we need to address prior to launching our Preseason” were “surfaced” during XDefiant’s testing. Therefore, we’ve decided to put off XDefiant’s preseason.
Ubisoft expressed their commitment to resolving the aforementioned concerns and conducting thorough testing in order to fulfil their objective of achieving excellence as a leading arcade shooter. The developer refrained from providing a revised projection for the release window, but assured that it will disseminate information promptly as it became available. Kotaku made an attempt to contact Ubisoft in order to inquire about the “inconsistencies” encountered by XDefiant. However, no answer was received from Ubisoft at the time of the article’s publication.

XDefiant, a highly anticipated video game, is currently scheduled for release in the summer of 2023, as indicated on its official website. Despite the extended waiting period, there is a compelling argument to suggest that the game is deserving of an indefinite wait. In June, Zack Zwiezen from Kotaku observed during the open beta of the game that XDefiant is specifically designed to cater to individuals who have previously derived pleasure from the more straightforward and expeditious period of Call of Duty. This is achieved by incorporating elements reminiscent of the mid-2000s, characterised by swift fighting and a diverse selection of items. While the aforementioned FPS formula may possess a certain degree of appeal in the distant future, it is imperative for XDefiant to prioritise the resolution of more immediate and critical concerns.

Ubisoft has been working hard to release the F2P shooter before the end of 2023. Failure to pass platform certification caused a second delay in September, which is unusual for a major publisher like Ubisoft.
Ubisoft’s rough year is continuing with the prolonged postponement of xDefiant. Some of its games originally planned for release in 2023 (like the similarly troubled Skull & Bones) were pushed back to 2024, leaving only the recently released Assassin’s Creed: Mirage and the upcoming Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora as the company’s major releases in 2023.

Studios need to decide whether or not to maintain developing these games in the hopes that increased funding would increase interest. Alternatively, unsuccessful live-service games must be discontinued before they bring a whole development studio down with them. For instance, Boss Key Games’ 2017 game LawBreakers performed so poorly that the studio was shut down a few months after release. After a little over a year on the market, the game was discontinued.
